Copyright query

I’m hoping to one day produce comic versions of Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. Would this only become a copyright issue if I made any money off the comics?

For example, if I just posted them as a webcomic and stated in a disclaimer that the story wasn’t mine, would that be acceptable, or would that be breaking copyright?

Help?

Dude thanks so much for replying, this is really useful information. I’m hoping the whole turning a blind eye thing...
  3. varethane answered: Actually, I think a number of Steinbeck’s books are back in the Public Domain, meaning you can build off of them after all.
